-
- ABSTRACT: The focus of the article is on the
- neurological phenomena called synesthesia,
- literally, "mingling of the senses." This entails
- the ability of certain people to experience mixed
- sense impressions, that is, for instance, to see
- sounds <LK108 HEARING> as colors, <ABS03 COLOR> or
- touch tastes. <ABS06 FOOD TASTE TESTS>
-
- Researcher-neurologist Richard Cytowic is cited
- throughout the article, which includes some results
- of his investigations, that is, from anecdotal
- evidence or controlled experiments. The author of
- this piece also provides examples of synesthesia
- from several well-known poets and literary figures.
-
-
- Cytowic also theorizes that synesthesia is not
- psychological in nature but is more neurological in
- nature. <LK150 NEUROLOGICAL - ARTICLE THEMES>
-
- More specifically, he believes sense perceptions
- for those with synesthesia are not processed by the
- brain in the same way they are by "normal" people.
- He provides evidence in support of this claim when
- he found that activity in the cortext of the brain
- of a research subject significantly decreased while
- activity in the limbic system increased.
-
- RESEARCHERS QUOTED IN ARTICLE:
-
- Cytowic, Richard. Neurologist with a clinical
- practice in Washington, D.C., and is a researcher
- in synesthesia. He published an article on his
- research on this topic in "Brain and Cognition" in
- 1982.
